KELLY MILLER SMITH DAY | Equip. Amplify. Activate.

October 23, 2023

“What we want is not progress, we want complete freedom.”

—The Rev. Dr. Kelly Miller Smith, Sr.

The Kelly Miller Smith Foundation works to ensure that social justice advocates have access to adequate resources to reach their fullest potential. Through engaging workshops, inspiring speakers, and meaningful discussions, our programming aims to deepen our understanding of social justice issues, provide effective strategies to immediately respond to a social crisis, and deliver solutions that provide sustained change for marginalized communities. But our commitment to social justice doesn't end there.

Every year, the Kelly Miller Smith Foundation celebrates Kelly Miller Smith Day on the 4th Monday in October in partnership with local colleges, faith-based organizations, community leaders, and social justice organizations. Kelly Miller Smith Day is a day for civic action and works to advance the effectiveness of social justice activism through engagement, education, preparation, and activation as inspired by the learnings and legacy of The Rev. Dr. Kelly Miller Smith, Sr.

Join us. Learn how you can partner with us on college campuses where, together, we will help equip, amplify, and activate a generation of emerging and established social justice activists– furthering the goal of complete freedom for all. This day of civic action will:

  • Further EQUIP and Empower Communities: Ensure access to interactive workshops, and key resources that equip students and community members with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to engage in social justice work

  • AMPLIFY Youth and Marginalized Voices: Center and uplift the voices and experiences of marginalized communities, promoting a more inclusive and diverse understanding of social justice; and organize a forum for emerging and established student leaders to lead and facilitate discussions on social challenges and solutions

  • ACTIVATE Students and Community Members:  Promote and encourage participation with social justice organizations, providing opportunities for individuals to take action. Opportunities may include: volunteering, service-learning projects, advocacy campaigns, and mentorship programs

  • Help Participants Grow Critical Networks: Help develop connections and networks among students, alumni, and professionals in social justice fields, fostering mentorship, collaboration, and career development opportunities

  • Foster Collaboration and Shared Responsibility: Cultivate a sense of collaboration and partnership among students, faculty, and community members, promoting collective action and shared responsibility in addressing social injustices

  • Acknowledge and Celebrate Emerging Leaders: Acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of emerging and established leaders on college campuses with the coveted Kelly Miller Smith Foundation’s Post Libertatum Pax Award and Emerging Leaders Awards, inspiring the next generation of leaders to continue their impactful work.

Throughout the year, the Kelly Miller Smith Foundation, in partnership with key faith, civic and educational leaders and organizations across the country, also provides ongoing events, resources and networking opportunities to help social justice champions continue their growth, development, and activism to achieve the freedom and rights all humans deserve.

Together, we can create a community dedicated to equity and justice for all.
